MoscheZanzareFaleneRagni

PREDATORI ↓

Bisce Aironi Falchi Insetti acquatici
BisceAironiFalchiInsetti acquatici

JF MA MG JA SO ND

  Very active   Little active   Inactive

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia)

Italian tree frog (Hyla intermedia). Mimicry is one of its main weapons of defense against predators. The tree frog lays motionless many hours, mingling with the foliage of trees or bushes. It often hides among the brambles or in the impenetrable vegetation. In the evening it is active and it hunts the flies, mosquitoes and butterflies. With a sight sensitive to the slightest movements, it identifies the prey and it reaches it with agility, even by performing acrobatic jumps. Its short sticky tongue becomes an infallible weapon.

Italian tree frog (Hyla intermedia)

The tree frog has very particular adaptations to the arboreal life. The adhesive pads on the fingertips allow it to climb easily on vertical walls. The sense of balance is well developed.

CICLO VITALE DELLA SPECIE

Tree frogs reach the breeding areas

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia)

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia). Italian tree frog (Hyla intermedia). The male has a single vocal pocket under the throat, often yellow color. It works as a sounding board and reaches considerable dimensions in relation to the body of the animal. It has a very important function, in fact the males who sing louder are preferred by females and have a greater reproductive success. The tree frogs also sing outside the reproductive period and start to croak already during the first year of life.

coupling

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia)

When the couple finally reaches a place suitable for spawning, the female releases the eggs in water and the male releases the spermatozoa, it is in the water that happens the meeting between the gametes: the fertilization. Then the couple separates. The male will probably remain nearby to wait for other females, the female will return to the forest or to the reeds for a while.

Eggs

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia)

The tree frogs lay a few hundred eggs, united in small clusters that are mainly attached to aquatic plants. Larger females lay larger and larger eggs *.

Tadpole

Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia)

Larvae (tadpoles) are born from the eggs. The tadpole of the tree frog is recognized by the great distance between the two eyes. The tail membrane is wide and transparent and arrives just behind the head. It is very active and snappy and hides quickly in the mud or between the plant matter of the bottom at the first perceived danger. In fact, it has a good view and effectively captures water vibrations. The tadpoles then reabsorb the tail and turn into adults who measure in this state about 1.5 cm.
